like most photographers i know, when i am on assignment i shoot "off" the assignment all the time....when i see something that appeals to me, i try to make a photograph...the master of this is elliott erwitt who managed to shoot so much of his body of work "off" of whatever he was supposed to be doing....some of elliott's best work was "off" of some of his advertising campaigns and editorial shoots....
here in senegal i was working on the roots of "rap" music...but, i had never been to senegal before and there was just too much around me to resist....besides, i just like to "play" with the camera everywhere all the time....sometimes the pictures fall into themes...sometimes they are just little vignettes that end up going "nowhere" except for the joy of making photographs....the day i lose that, is the day i go back working at mcdonalds...
amazon ......just the name alone sounds romantic, scary, forbidden and just adventurous.....or, at least, that is how it sounds to me.....i barely touched the surface with a 6 day boat trip from iquitos to manaus.....but, i was hooked just by that little trip and haunted both by the river and the images of alex webb.....to see alex's work please take a look at his book "amazon"....
any river trip takes me to huck finn in my mind no matter where i am.....and no matter where i am i remember that it was mark twain who made me aware of travel and adventure in the first place......one of my favorite lines from twain was when he described being on the river at night.....twain said "it was late and it smelt late".....
