i will be running two photo essay workshops from my New York loft space again this year...this will be my third year for inviting a few select students (max 12) into my home for an intense week of personal shooting as well as meeting key editors , publishers ,and iconic photographers...
whoever among you decides to take this workshop will be in for a great week...in the past, our loft workshop has been the "talk of the town", since your final show, the result of your hard work for the week, will be shown to the New York "photo world"....the whole point of this workshop is to present you and your work in the most realistic possible way to a group of the "best of the best"....
i will spend "one on one" time with each of you to help you choose a photo essay which you will complete during this week....first, i will look at each of your portfolios and see where you need to "go" for your personal "next step"...daily group critiques from the previous day's work will be followed each day with a guest editor or photographer presentation.....
for example, David Griffin, Director of Photography at National Geographic spent a day with us last year...so did, Mary Anne Golon of Time Magazine... Eugene Richards, and James Nachtwey and Brenda Ann Keneally and Elliott Erwitt made their time available to my students...and Sara Rosen from Powerhouse Books took her time to go over the rigors of the publishing world....so, you will make contact and have a chance to show your work to people who might otherwise be hard to "pin down"...the "cast of characters" who will "jam" with us will change ,depending on who is available, but i promise to keep all of this beneficial and productive for you...
you will also spend a lot of time alone...yes, alone...alone with your project and work...i try to load you up with ideas and stimulation and then send you out...it is only in this way that you will really learn in a way that will be most productive for you in the future...
this forum itself is an extension of my workshops and some of you are getting a good class right here on line..that is just fine by me...but, some of you may benefit from a more intense "hands on" experience...if , in your mind, this would be best for you, then please think about joining us....
oh yes, "us" is Marie Arago, who has been with me from the beginning on these workshops "at home" and makes the whole week "work"...and Mike Courvoisier who handles all of the tech side , building your slide shows and taking care of the daily critiques and makes the prints for a small group exhibition of your work ...there will also be at least one intern/assistant available to make sure things run smoothly for you...this team works....
i do several workshops a year, but this one is "my baby" and my pride and joy....please see the nice review we had in American Photo Magazine this month and just scroll through the archives right here for september 2006 and 2007 in this section and you will see some of the past student's work as well as the guest announcements for the "grand finale"....
the two choices for 2008 are: September 12-19 and September 26--October 3....if interested you should contact Michael Courvoisier: harveyworkshops@gmail.com or mikecourvoisier@gmail.com yes, a portfolio review is required to insure a "like quality" of student.....we are looking for talented emerging photographers who really want to "move forward" in this business, this art, this craft....
if you decide to join us , it will be lots of work for all of us...but, i promise you we will also have a lot of fun doing it...many on this forum have already taken one of my classes....so, forget the nice American Photo review and just ask one of my "former students" about the experience....my so called "former students" tend to be "students for life" and i happily mentor for as long as mentoring is required in your photographic life....
