with 12 new students who have joined me "at home" in new york for the next week , i may not be able to post quite as regularly....as you can appreciate, i must must give them as much time as possible...however, i will try to post some of their work as it comes in...we will just have to see how that might work...
i have had one cancellation for my "at home" class the second week in october, so if anyone wants to join us in new york then, please contact marie (marie arago@mac.com)....portfolio required for acceptance....
ok, they are waiting for me now!!! back soonest.....
well, the bangkok workshop(see below) just got more interesting....my old friend james nachtwey and i are going to do it together....now many photographers would first imagine that jim and i have nothing in common...
jim photographs "conflict" mostly in black & white....i photograph "peace" mostly in color....what could we both possibly have in common that would attract students for a one week workshop??
almost everything actually....our subject matter is different (although we have both "traded places" a few times) but our commitment to excellence and dedication to our craft is the same...both bullseye maniacs about getting things right...making it work...going to extremes in the name of fine photography...plus, we have been friends for 25 years or so....we actually met in a "war zone" in the 80's on the honduras/nicaragua border with jim on one side of the war and me on the other...lots and lots of mutual respect going on here...
this is a first workshop collaboration for either of us...jim and i were part of a group of photographers in Thailand earlier this year to shoot for a book called 9 Days in the Kingdom....we keyed off of this experience to try our hand at a mutual workshop for this fall...please log on to: www.thebangkokphotoworkshop.com
this just might be one to remember.....
many of you have gently suggested that i post my upcoming workshops here...will do...in the past, what seems to happen , is that the workshops i now do for various established workshop programs i.e. Tuscany Photographic Workshops, Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, and National Geographic Expedition Workshops, all have sophisticated marketing programs and my workshops seem to be full by the time i even remember that i am scheduled to do them!!!
last year, for the first time, i decided to do some workshops on my own..i.e.the workshops "at home" in my new york space....i mention it briefly here on this forum and then marie arago and i spend the rest of our time looking at portfolios and selecting the appropriate students...
by the way, i must fairly mention that Leica Cameras have kindly offered to allow all of the students in my two separate classes in new york the use of M8's during the duration of the workshops...and HP is donating the large Z3100 printer and paper so that we may have a fine "work in progress" exhibition of student work during and following the loft workshop....my goal , as always, is to have my students walk out the door very pleased with the whole experience....
so, for those of you who might be interested in my first "off campus" workshop, please join me in Bangkok at the end of november 2007 ....i know, i know, that sounds like tomorrow!!! ..but, please check out: www.theharveybangkokphotoworkshop.com..........i totally apologize for the "short notice" on this one, but trying to publish books and shoot for magazines and still do workshops makes my schedule a little different than if i just dropped everything else and became a professional "workshop organizer"....that is not my inclination...
in my mind, the primary thing i have to offer some of you is that i do not "drop" my professional working life....giving you firsthand critique and help for your career based on my contemporary involvement with the publishing business, is what i really have to give...my work is something i take very seriously...but, when i stop to teach, i take that just as seriously....so juggling my schedule is just part of the deal....and , if this one works, then perhaps i will do more, so if you miss this one, perhaps the "next", if there is a next.....
i must say , Bangkok is a terrific place to work....if you cannot find a good subject in Bangkok, then you should hang up your cameras forever!!! some of you may remember i was shooting in Bkk for the upcoming book "Nine Days in the Kingdom" just last fall....and , i have been in and out of Bkk over the years while shooting in Vietnam and Cambodia....so, it is one of my favorite cities in the world and the Thais are just the best hosts in the world...never having been "colonized" by any foreign power, makes Thailand so so unique...
yes, yes so far my personal workshops are a bit more expensive than some....i just do not have any choice at the moment on this because since these are "one time" workshops i just cannot get the sponsorship that i might if if ran a "full time" school....workshops are expensive to run ...period....the ideal is to have a sponsor pay for everything....but, such is not the case here...however, we will have two free scholarship slots for talented local Thai photographers who could not possibly afford this class..
however, as many of you already know, you can get at least a "free " portfolio from me anytime if you just stay "on my case" and if you happen to live in new york...or, if you catch me while traveling...i do the best i can...my door is most often open.......
