india workshop...
does anyone here want to join me in Rajasthan in late january??
we now have seven students enrolled for this advanced workshop, january 19-27, 2008 in this most colorful part of India...we can take three more students (portfolio review required)...please log on to tpw.it for details....this will be my first workshop in India and i am totally psyched to shoot along with my students.... my "support team" is my absolute most favorite crew from the Tuscany Photographic Workshops with whom i have worked for ten years (see the archive for my story last february on carlo roberti and the work from my talented students from TPW )...
this is bound to be a good one ....i have only been to India once , but did not have much chance to shoot on that trip ....so , i will be learning India right along with my students....small class, intense, great material.....the hard part will be in "overcoming" all of the great imagery we have heretofore seen in India...cliches abound in this most photogenic country.....that will be the challenge for all of us, but let's give it a go...
David- This a bit off topic, but I've had some devastating computer issues since the wksp and have lost your contact info. I'm just now getting my head above water. Regardless, I just wanted to wish you and everyone else at HQ a wonderful and safe holiday.
India sounds incredible, don't wear your finger too bad. All the best.

I wish it had been last year, when I was in Gujarat and a bit in R, same period exactly.
Though I sincerely must say I was totally unfamiliar with your work, then, and quite unable to take in all the good influences and self-questionning that has come in by blogging along with you and our friends here. This is what is exciting to me, to be 52 and be a work in progress, so that what you do now is now what you did then, and not what you will do next year!
Besides, my Asia trip has been shelved altogether this next winter. C' est la vie...

Hi David,
in Feb 2007 I traveled to India for the first time (Kolkata, Varanasi, Darjeeling). Visually it was absolutely overwhelming; the hardest part was trying (with limited success, I have to admit) to avoid the clichés about the country. Fortunately my focus was on the emerging middle class of India, which I guess will be a lot harder to find in Rajasthan than it was in the West Bengal city of Kolkata.

It's an interesting workshop
how do one send a portfolio to be reviewed?

Interesting proposal David, although I don't think I'd pass the portfolio review!
I was planning on visiting India in January, but am looking at Kolkata as my destination. I have a love of rotting colonial architecture!

I have been to Rajasthan many times and CAN NOT WAIT to see what you come up with there. It's like a giant movie set filled with extras...definitely a lot of what has been seen and done already but SO much available to "see as you see it."
One could easily spend a lifetime photographing there...as many have.
Please post from there so we can get your take on it.

That sounds amazing. But I think my parents will shoot me if I tell them I am trying to take off from school... again. But who needs to make it through sophomore year, right?

I would LOVE to see India. Likely not in January, but soon... very soon.

I wish I had money, time and lacked a fear to flying! My parents lived for years in Kashmir before I was born, so in an strange way I feel sort of a link with that country. But it's just a blurry imagery of mango trees by the river, deep blue lakes and esporadic civil unrest. Some sort of tense misticism. Maybe I try to get my mum there while she still can do it.

David, wish I had the means to join you in this workshop. What an opportunity it is going to be, no doubt!!! I don't know whether one can join this workshop in private (if he/she takes care of his/her own costs in Rajasthan and the journey). In any case, I wish you guys all the best and a great success. Rajasthan is so colourful, I am already eagerly waiting to see the photos. But in case you come to Kolkata (West Bengal) or anywhere near, I would love to meet you in person! That would be a much bigger dream coming true, really...
Happy New Year 2008 to you and your family...

Dear David,
The India workshop sounds so great that I am planning to join. I am also for the first time preparing my portfolio and I'd be happy to receive some hints from you on how many items I should include and if I have to use any specific selection criteria.
Thanks in advance!

Dear David,
I have some questions concerning the Easter processions in Sicily March 2008. How can I get in touch with you?
Thanks in advance.
