blue water, palm trees, a cold presidente
maybe it is just the cold now here in new york...maybe it is my general love for the Caribbean....maybe it is....well, maybe....anyway i want to go south....like the Dominican Republic, like Cabarete ....i have never been, but everyone tells me it is culture weather things to do terrific....
marie and michael and i want to see if anyone is interested in joining us for a workshop in the DR in april...probably mid-april...we will limit this class to 10 students....portfolio review required....love of the Caribbean required...great work required...
despite the tranquil nature of blue water and palm trees and a cold bottle of cerveza Presidente, this workshop will be just as challenging as all of my workshops.....the mandate for everyone to produce right out to their limit will be the order of the day...my job is to figure you out, study your work carefully, and help you get to your "next level"....we will certainly have fun doing this, but we will not be on vacation...well, maybe at the end we can throw the frisbee or something!!
please drop marie arago a note if you are at all interested....mariearago@mac.com
just look at this as "spring break"....but, with a real mission

The DR is a fantastic place. I have only been there once for a quick hit assignment - in and out, no time to really explore - but the bug bit me and I've wanted to return ever since. The people, the color, sounds and smells were great. And of course the Presidente beer was cold and tasty!

I can smell salt water and sunscreen, meat or fish cooking on a beach grill... feel sand between the toes...

David - This may be a question for another post or private mail, but what do you think of the photojournalism program at ICP... or other 'top' PJ programs in the U.S. and abroad? Is it an investment that 'pays' off in knowledge or opportunity? I suspect it's what you make of it, but the cost makes the program seem like a big risk. Maybe Marie could also comment?
I don't mean to derail our thinking about coconuts, sun and beaches... mummmm Presidente.

Would have loved to, except I have a date in Ireland for May, and I can't take too much time off from the 9-5 job, 8(

KELLY...
yes, you should definitely talk to marie...she is an "ex" and knows all of the other "ex's" at ICP...
i am always a bit skeptical of the "formal" education programs....from my own personal experience, having gone to the best photo-j school of the time, that either assisting with someone you respect or taking a workshop with someone you respect is a better way to go....i do not say this because i myself do workshops...i do workshops because i just remember how i felt after i did a workshop compared to how i felt after 2 yrs of graduate school...
most academic teachers are exactly that..often far away from the realities of what is happening today...not always, but often...gregory crewdson, for example, as a teacher at princeton would be an exception...and , of course, there are others...but, you must look very very carefully at the faculty...the NAME or alleged reputation of an institution guarantees you nothing...there are good and bad faculty everywhere....again, you must EDIT the information printed judiciously...
cheers, david

I've drawn the curtains on a snowy night outside; hunkered down with two teenagers, dog and cat inside; and just thinking about warm weather, blue water, cold beer and living on island time -- and a great workshop -- seems like a glimpse of heaven.

Well, well. After all these years down here on my own, I see that the DR is finally getting some recognition from the photo community. Not only a DAH workshop but the World Press show will be up at the Casa Real in March. Well, if I can be of any help, just let me know -- btw everyone here is drinking Presidente Light now. Try the Bohemia while you are at it.
